The Love that Moves the Stars and Planets…

Ipsum Esse Subsistens is a phrase popularized by Thomas Aquinas, that means the subsistent act of to-be itself.  It is part of the argument from contingency, that defends God’s existance.

It may seem like an outdated Latin phrase, but it opens us up to how close God is to us and to the fact that he is constantly sustaining us, giving us life, grounding our very being.

To believe in God is to see all of the cosmos as a great love story.  Everything that is can, in some way, lead us closer to God.  And this belief in God is not fantastical, but deeply rational.

This blog will explore my great love of Aquinas and my love of Dante.  One was a philosopher, the other a poet.  It is my hope that this blog will show how the Truth is Beautiful.

The spiritual journey is not always easy.  Dante in the Divine Comedy starts lost in the woods and literally has to go through hell to get where he is going.  But ‘in him we live and move and have our being’ (Acts 17:28 RSV), and that means the help we seek is never far off.

“The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be still.”

(Exodus 14:14)
